In 2009, he applied for the sixth season of the casting show The X Factor, which was broadcast from August to December 2009 on the evening program of the British television channel ITV. Murs reached the final of the competition, but was defeated by 18-year-old Joe McElderry.
He subsequently went on tour with the show The X Factor Live. In February 2010, he was signed to record labels Epic Records and Syco Music. His debut single Please Don't Let Me Go was released in late August 2010, and the debut album Olly Murs in early December.
In German-speaking countries, Olly Murs was not marketed until his second album and in particular his single Heart Skips a Beat, which went to number 1 in the German singles chart on 6 April 2012.
